Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was born in the village of Tungipara under The Gopalgonj subdivision of Faridpur district on March 17, 1920. His father Sheikh Lutfar Rahman and mother Sheikh Sayera Khatun had four daughter and two sons. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was their third children. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman gained the title of ‘Bangabandhu’ on February,23.
Bangabandhu`s family in 1971:
Bangabandhu`s house No.32, Dhanmondi Road was completely silent on march 25, 1971, as the sound of gunshots was echoing around the city. Bangabandhu`s eldest son Sheikh Kamal was out of home for forming barricades against the Pakistan Army. Bangabandhu sent the girls member of his family to a safer place and he gave their responsibility to his son in law Mr. Wazed Miah. His wife Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib stayed with him. Just before midnight, when Bangabandhu declared of independence the Pakistan army surrounded his home and set firing randomly.
After that day, when Begum Mujib left the house with other members of her home and changed the place from one place to another for safety, people came forward to helping them. When Begum Mujib started to communicate with Awami League leaders, soon the family was taken to Dhanmondi House No.18 and kept under house arrest by Pakistan Army.
Bangabandhu`s parent, when feeling ill in October, were admitted to P.G hospital at that time Begum Mujib and her family were allowed to visit the hospital for a little time every day. On 27 July Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Sheikh Mujib was blessed with a baby who is later named Sajeeb Wazed Joy. Sheikh Jamal joined the freedom fighter at this time.
The tale of homecoming:
After nine months as a prisoner of the Pakistan Army, at last on 7th January, Bangabandhu left Pakistan for London. On 8 January 1972 Bangabandhu arrived in London and left London for Dhaka on the 9th January in 1972 and also stopover in Delhi. He was welcomed by the president, prime minister, and many political leaders of India. On 10 January, after staying about 2 hours in Delhi, he arrived at Tejgaon Airport and received a guard of honor by the Indian army and the Mukti Bahini. When opened the door of the aircraft, a big smile appeared on his face. Prime minister Tajuddin Ahmed then moved forward and after completing the formalities of the airport, Bangabandhu and the figures of the Mujibnagar Government climbed upon a board of an open truck.
Arriving Ras-course, Bangabandhu wept remembering the sacrifices of the Bangalees had made in the war against Pakistan. A moment later Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman made his way back to his family, who had been waiting for him at the house in Dhanmondi Road No 32.
Bangabandhu at the UN:
Bangabandhu`s speech on 25th September at the United Nations (UN) is a matter of great pride for us. Just after a week, Bangladesh became a member of the UN. Bangabandhu assured that Bangladesh would follow the ideology of mutual respect, national sovereignty, regional integrity, and non-interference into international issues of other countries.
In his speech, Bangabandhu expressed his utmost gratitude to the UN and the international community for standing beside Bangladesh with their aids and support in the reconstruction of the war-ravaged country, relocation of 10 million war-refugees who took shelter in India during the Liberation War. the leader of the third world countries expressed his deep concerns over a global recession and inflation, unemployment, unequal distribution of wealth, and opportunities. He expected the UN would take substantial roles in solving the prevailing human crises in the subcontinent as well as in other countries.
Bangabandhu`s Relationship with other countries:
Bangabandhu had an open mind to maintain good relations with all countries irrespective of their capitalist, democratic or socialist ideologies. During the period between 1972 and 1975, Bangladesh signed more than seventy treaties, agreements, memoranda, and contracts with different countries of the world. Managing entry into OIC and attending its conference at Lahore filled up a major gap in the diplomacy of Bangladesh,
Bangabandhu sent a medical team to Egypt and Syria for the treatment of the war victims of the Arab-Israel war. The period of 1972 to 1974 was actually a bright and busy era for Bangabandhu Government when he visited many countries of Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America. He made a visit to those countries to gain support from those countries and promote friendly relationships with them. His leadership, wisdom, and personal relationship with world leaders made him a successful politician of international repute.
From all the above incidents it is easy to guess why is Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman the father of the nation, the best personality of the century? Such the world leader is not born again and again and we are proud that he is a Bengali forever.
